Year 6

Junior Life Skills 2019

Welcome to the SUMMER Term in Year 6!

This first half term is probably the most important in their education so far.  We will be consolidating all their learning from the past four years in preparation for their Standard Attainment tests, which begin on 13th May.  Please ensure that your child is in school that week.  A letter will be coming home informing you of the specific details of the week, including Breakfast!

All of our writing this term is based around our class book ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’, by Rick Riordan, our science: Animals including humans and our topics of Europe and Ancient Greece. We will be writing adventure stories and scientific explanations as well as Greek myths, journey stories, and newspaper reports.  Within all our writing, we will be seeking to show all of the grammatical features that we have learned this year.

This first half of term, we will be focusing on geometry (shape and angles), statistics and problem solving. After half term, we will focus solely on problem solving, undertaking mathematical projects..

In Science, we will be studying Animals, including humans, to find out how the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems work. Then, we will be undertaking Sex and Relationship Education.

Our Geography topic for the first half of term is ‘Europe’ where we will be looking at the countries, rivers, mountains and climate of the continent as well as studying 6-figure grid references and then, after half term, we turn our attention to the Ancient Greeks.  We will learn about philosophy, democracy and establish what it is that we have learned from the Greeks as well as learning about how the Olympics began. Our art this term is linked to the Ancient Greeks as we will be recreating Ancient Greek pottery.

During PPA, the children will be learning French and Music with Mrs Mahoney and Miss Pooley
