Welcome to Attenborough Class 

Our Year 1 class this year have chosen Sir David Attenborough as our inspirational class name because he has spent his life exploring the natural world and helping people understand and care for our planet. Through his documentaries, he has shown us amazing animals and habitats from around the world, inspiring generations to be curious about nature and learn more about the environment. His passion for discovery reminds us to ask questions, explore new ideas and never stop learning.

Sir David Attenborough is also a wonderful role model because he encourages everyone to look after the Earth and the living things that share it with us. He has shown great determination, kindness and respect throughout his life, using his voice to make a positive difference. As the Attenborough Class, we aim to follow his example by being curious learners, caring citizens and responsible members of our school community who always try their best and help protect the world around us.

Autumn Term in Year 1

Our Class Teachers 

Our class teacher is Mrs Kelly and our class Higher level Teaching Assistant Ms Blunt. Mrs Kelly leads English (Phonics, Reading and Writing) ad Ms Blunt is a family support member of staff and she works with families, children in groups or on a one to one basis. She also covers the class when Mrs Kelly is planning out of the classroom.  We also have Miss Eggar in the afternoons to support some children in the class and have some fun with us! 

PE

Our PE days are on Mondays and Fridays. Please make sure that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days. Children should wear their Mount Street PE hoodie, team coloured T-shirt, black shorts, jogging bottoms or leggings and black trainers. Children should not wear any jewellery on these days as it is not safe to wear during PE lessons. If you have any questions, please ask your class teacher

Home learning

Each week, your child will bring home tasks that will support their learning in class. This will comprise of daily reading, weekly spellings and number practise through an app called Numbots. I will also send links via Dojo and printed out, of QR codes to support with phonics.  

Reading

We believe that reading is the foundation of all learning and so we would like you to read with your child for 10 minutes every day. Your child will have a reading diary, along with their phonics reading book/sheet or AR reading book. This should be an enjoyable time and we encourage you to have a conversation with your child about the story. Please support your children’s reading by reminding them to look for Special Friends, Fred Talk, Read the Word and also by asking them questions about the text. Children who are on our AR reading will choose books between a given reading range and complete quizzes in school. I will also send home a link to Oxford Owl , where you can read a range of phonics books online and complete some simple reading quizes.

Spellings

spellings will be taught every day. We begin the year working on our fine motor skills, reading the common exception words for year 1 and starting to record them from memory. After the half term, every Monday, your child will be given 10 spellings to learn in school. They will practise them in school every day and have a quick check on them on a Friday.  By the end of the year, they will need to be able to read, spell and use the common exception words for their year group.

Maths 

Children in Attenborough class will have a 'Numbots' log in. They can create their robot, complete challenges and win coins.
