Year 5 - Pankhurst Class

Welcome to the Autumn Term in Year 5!

This year, our class will be named after the inspiring leader Emmeline Pankhurst. She was a brave and determined visionary who helped women win the right to vote in Britain. She believed that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men, and she worked tirelessly to make this happen. Through her courage, perseverance and commitment to fairness, she inspired many people to stand up for what they believed in. Our class is named Pankhurst to celebrate her important achievements and to remind us to be confident, resilient and willing to make a positive difference in the world.

Our Class Teachers 

Our class teacher is Miss Matthews, who taught many of us a few years ago. She is delighted to have the opportunity to teach us again and is looking forward to an exciting year filled with learning, laughter and success. Miss Matthews is also the Religion and Worldviews Lead at our school.

Our class TA is Miss Zarazadeh, who brings a warm and compassionate presence to our classroom. She helps to lead ELSA across the school and is always on hand to support and nurture our learners.

Contacting us

If you haven't already, please sign up to our class dojo. You will be able to receive important messages and updates from our class teacher. This will include photographs of the brilliant learning we will be working on. In addition, it is a great way for you to contact the adults that work with us. 

PE Days

Our PE days will be Mondays and Wednesdays. On these days, we will need to wear our PE kit to school. Any updates on changes of PE days will be published on Class Dojo. 

Our PE kit is:

• Trainers/plimsols
• PE hoodie (provided by the school on the first day back).
• PE shirt (provided by the school on the first day back).

Homework/Home Learning

We will be provided English and Maths homework each Friday and they must return to school by the following Friday. 

Spellings will also be handed out on a Friday for us to practise throughout the week. We will have a spelling quiz each Friday on the spellings we have learnt at home. 

Reading

Reading is one of the most important skills we develop in Year 5, as it helps us to become confident learners across all areas of the curriculum. To support this, reading should be prioritised both at school and at home, and we ask that every child reads for at least 10 minutes every day.

Times Tables Practice

Multiplication is a key skill in Year 5 and forms the foundation for many areas of maths, including fractions, division and problem-solving. Building on the excellent work and priority given to times tables in Year 4, children should continue to practise on Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) for 5-10 minutes each day to develop their speed, accuracy and confidence.

Author Study

We will continue our love of reading by enjoying 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell. It tells the story of four children who survive a plane crash in the Amazon rainforest and must work together to find a way home. Along the way, they discover the wonders and dangers of the jungle, learn important lessons about friendship and courage, and uncover a mysterious secret hidden deep within the forest.
