SMSC

Schools are required to provide for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils. 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' states that:

 

‘Protecting children from the risk of radicalisation should be seen as part of schools’ and colleges’ wider safeguarding duties, and is similar in nature to protecting children from other forms of harm and abuse. During the process of radicalisation it is possible to intervene to prevent vulnerable people being radicalised.’

 

As part of this requirement, we are expected to actively promote fundamental British values which the Government define as:

 

•          Democracy
•          The rule of law
•          Individual liberty
•           Mutual respect
•          and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

 

 

Democracy is an important value at our school. We believe that the voice of everyone should be heard. Pupils regularly have the opportunity to have their voice heard through our School Council.  School Council representatives from each class meet regularly to discuss issues, rules and school needs.

 

Representatives also attend Youth Council meetings in the City each term.

 

Pupils are taught about the origins of democracy in Key stage 2 through their study of the Ancient Greeks and also within PPA sessions in Years 5/6. Debates are held in subjects such as topic, RE & Literacy.  

 

The Rule of Law - We believe that everyone needs to understand that we are all are subject to laws and that rules need to be followed both in and out of school. Students know and understand that there are consequences should these laws and rules be broken and that laws are there for our protection.

 

Class and school rules are established at the start of the Autumn term and enforced throughout the year. Rewards linked to Golden time  and sanctions are in place to bring about positive behaviour. Police, fire brigade and lifeguard representatives support our curriculum to promote rules of law and safety.

 

Individual Liberty - Students are encouraged to make correct choices at our school knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. We believe that students should be empowered through the development of their self-esteem, self-knowledge and self-confidence. Children are encouraged to show independence in learning and are encouraged to think for themselves. Students are taught to make safe choices through our e-safety teaching, assemblies and PHSE lessons.

 

Mutual Respect - Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.

 

All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect. Mutual respect is at the heart of PSHE and RE teaching.

 

Tolerance of those of different Faiths and Beliefs – A recognised school of sanctuary, we aim to enhance our childrens’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society by giving them opportunities to experience diversity in our local community and through our class topics.

 

The school draws on the support of a wide range of contributors in order to support teaching of PSHE. We capitalise on their expertise to support learning. Regular visitors include:

 

•          Representatives from local churches 
•          The PCSO
•          The Fire Service
•          The school nurse
•          Lifeguards
•          In addition children at Key Stage 2 participate in the Life skills programme
