Camp Kernow 2023
Fri 26 May 2023Camp Kernow 2023
Day 1
On arrival the children explored the camp and learnt how the team at Camp Kernow live off grid using a well and solar panels to provide fresh water and electricity. They were then shown how to use the composting toilets and how waste water is cleaned through a reed bed. After lunch, the children were shown how fabrics can be coloured using natural resources. Following this, they went on a foraging walk, where they were shown which plants in the wild they could eat including wild garlic and nettles. They then enjoyed the foraged ingredients with some fried potatoes!
After dinner, which the children helped prepare and clean up after, they went on a night walk where they met a woodsman in the woods who told them ancient stories sat by a lake with lantern for light!
Day 2
After an early start and a delicious breakfast, the children were taught the skill of archery. They were all very good and all managed to hit the target! Following lunch, the children then were taken to the climbing wall. Again everyone did their best and challenged themselves to climb higher or take a more challenging path each time.
Dinner was woodfired pizza. The children made the pizza dough and then selected their own toppings - delicious! Later in the evening, they all sat around the campfire, where they used a flint and steel to make a spark prior to lighting the campfire. They told stories and played games and then, once the fire was burning white, roasted marshmallows.
Day 3
The final day at camp - once the sleeping bags had been wrestled back into their bags, the children enjoyed another yummy breakfast and then said farewell to the camp and Charlie and Claire. Connie then took the children deep into the woods where they made dens and learnt about survival skills.
Finally, the children enjoyed a picnic lunch prior to boarding the coach to return to school.
A fantastic time was had by all. A huge thank you to all the staff at Camp Kernow, who made this an extremely memorable experience for all the children.
We look forward to visiting again next year!!!

and celebrate the uniqueness of each individual. As part of this focus, we held an
odd socks day. We have also celebrated Children in Need by dressing in MUFTI and/ or spotty clothes, raising £128.95 towards supporting activities that help improve children’s lives around the UK. Thank you for your generosity.

Interfaith Week
Sat 19 Nov 2022Year 6 were fortunate enough to take part in Interfaith Week this week. We visited the Guildhall where we learned more about both the Islamic faith and Humanism from guest speakers. After a refreshment break, we walked to Plymouth's Synagogue - the oldest Ashkenazi Synagogue still in regular use in the English-speaking world. Judaism is our RE topic this term and is linked also to our WWII history topic. Jerry Sibley gave us an in-depth explanation of the roles of the key members of the Synagogue as well as explaining about the Torah, the Ark, the Bimah and the menorah. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit as it helped to reinforce their learning.

Year 6 Service of Remembrance
Fri 11 Nov 2022Linked to our World War II history topic, Year 6 have been writing war poems and making clay poppies. To mark the special occasion of Armistice Day, they led a service of Remembrance in our garden where they recited some of the poem they had written, explained the significance of the minute's silence and then performed 'In Flander's Field.' by John McCrae. The whole school watched, together with the Year 6 parents; we were all very impressed by their behaviour and performance. After the service, the children 'planted' their poppies temporarily at the front of the school.

British Art Show 9
Fri 28 Oct 2022During Activity Week 2022, Year 5 and 6 visited The Box to explore the latest art exhibition -British Art Show 9. This is a landmark touring exhibition that celebrates the vitality of recent art made in Britain. The show explores three overarching themes – healing, care and reparative history; tactics for togetherness; and imagining new futures.
During the visit, we looked at and questioned the art. We thought about what we liked, disliked, what was strange and what was funny. Adam (from The Box) explained that this was new art, art that that was still being critiqued by the art community. We all had different opinions and each of us had a favourite piece.
When we returned to school, we created our own art, drawing on inspiration from the artists and their works and linking our ideas to our Environmental Study on Ocean Plastic Pollution.
